Yr City's A Sucker by LCD Soundsystem – Great B-sides

James Murphy always intended to be a drummer or a sound technician, but ended up fronting a dance-rock band New York’s LCD Soundsystem bridge the divide between dance and rock – Murphy’s raw vocals are a great entry point for rock fans who find dance music inaccessible.

‘Yr City’s A Sucker’ originally surfaced in the run of singles that led up to LCD Soundsystem’s 2005 debut album. It was the b-side for 2004’s ‘Movement’, and the nine minute full version was included on the bonus disc of their 2005 debut album LCD Soundsystem.

‘Yr City’s A Sucker’ is one of Murphy’s most relaxed pieces – it lopes along agreeably over cowbell, a dance floor ready bass line, burbling synths, and driving rhythm guitar. Murphy’s vocals are in is his sardonic Mark E Smith mode; The Fall were an important influence for the band. He’s written much more profound lyrics, and if you’re new to the band, ‘All My Friends’ from the 2007 masterpiece Sound of Silver is their most loved track.

In comparison, ‘Yr City’s A Sucker’ is a fun dance track with not much to say, but plenty of ear candy. More cowbell, please!

  1. I got into LCD Soundsystem a bit late and haven’t really listened to anything beyond the studio albums.
This tune is familiar, but I can’t say I’ve really heard the debut bonus disc.

    • I like the bonus disc a lot more than the album itself – it kind of explores a few different directions, while the album focuses on one specific sound. Debut single ‘Losing My Edge’ is great as well.
