Music Quiz: Hits of 1979

1. Suck city. 42/50. These quizzes are deceptive because you think ‘I got this.’ Then just a few wrong and you’re down the tubes.

   • And unfortunately The Tubes didn’t put out an album in 1980.

2. Whew, that was exhausting but also in my musical wheelhouse so a relatively easy 50/50 with 3:10 left on the clock. While not my favorite song of theirs, I don’t hate that Dr. Hook song. Guess you had to be there at the time…and I was. I’ll always have a soft spot for their “Cover Of The Rolling Stone.” My favorites in this quiz would be the songs by Michael Jackson, The Doobie Brothers, Charlie Daniels, The Cars, Supertramp, Wings, Toto, Nick Lowe, Little River Band, Earth Wind & Fire, Blues Brothers, Billy Joel, The Knack, Dire Straits, Cheap Trick and Chic. In fact, I believe I own just about every album by all of those artists, with the exception of Michael Jackson & Chic, where I only own a few key albums or a comprehensive compilation.

   • Man that’s a huge record collection. I don’t think I have a complete discography for anyone in this quiz. I dislike every Dr Hook song I’ve ever heard.

     • You can’t possibly dislike “Cover of the Rolling Stone.” I mean yeah, it sucks but at the same time it’s great if you know what i mean. “Wanna buy five copies for my mother.” Classic. “Sylvia’s Mother.” Now there’s a real POS.

       • And let’s not forget “Baby Makes Her Blue Jeans Talk.” I own a Dr. Hook compilation but haven’t played it in at least 15-20 years. I remember liking several songs. Will have to give it a spin again soon.

         • I don’t even *know* that one. Funny.

3. 40/50 – I wasn’t around yet so I’ll use that as my excuse

   • I caught the last few months, but spent most of them in the prem ward.

4. I never did get around to your quiz last week and this week’s score is too embarrassing to mention. I’ll blame it on the late nights in the last couple but really, 1979 is probably not my year.

5. SCORE
   48/50 … Being around my older sister back then is the reason I knew a lot of these…especially Kenny Rogers.

   • Looks like you’re in second place. I only know a handful of Kenny Rogers songs – I think he was big at the time but hasn’t lasted super well.

     • No…some of them I was thinking…how the heck do I know these…my sister’s music…minus the Osmonds.

6. 47/50 with only 17 seconds left. That was hard. I did have a few great guesses.

   • Good effort – that’s a good score this week! I did lots of educated guessing once I whittled down the ones I knew for sure.

7. Damn – time got away from me 39/50. By far the best song on this list is the Nick Lowe one.

   • I never hear that one on the radio – only know it through the album, so I haven’t heard it a million times.

     • You’re right – haven’t heard it on radio since in ages!

8. I guess I’m a slow coach as I was fighting the clock. A poor score but I did learn about the hits of 1979 which was a bonus

   • Like most charts it’s a fun mix of the sublime, the mundane, and the embarrassing.

9. 36/50, I’ll take it!

   • We generally encourage people using their first scores….
