Music Quiz: Find the Band Member

Congratulations to Tony, who scored the fastest time in last week’s Find the Band Member II quiz, locating 24 famous musicians in less than a minute.

This week, unsurprisingly, it’s Find the Band Member I – for some reason, I started at #6, so we still have #7 and #8 left to compete and complete.

I think they’re getting easier and easier – I was a little faster this time, solving the quiz with 24/24 with 3:10 remaining.

In other news, following my family’s Lin-Manuel Miranda post in the weekend, ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno’ has topped the Billboard 100, while the Encanto soundtrack is still on top of the album charts. I’m not a huge chart watcher – due to the impact of streaming, they’re more slow-moving than they used to be. But ‘Bruno’ is an interesting #1 for several reasons. It’s the first #1 Billboard single composed by one sole writer since 2018. Conversely, it’s the first-ever #1 to feature six lead vocalists. And it’s the first song from an animated movie to top the charts since ‘A Whole New World’ in 1993.

Also, some people missed The Replacements in the quiz last week. Here’s Paul Westerberg doing his Christmas shopping:

          • He is an interesting person. On one hand he wanted to be big and famous at one point but didn’t want what came with it.

          • I think Michael Stipe said that if R.E.M. had blown up as quickly as Nirvana, he wouldn’t have coped.

          • Yea I could believe it. They did take off pretty well but nothing like Nirvana….they didn’t have the “voice of the generation nonsense. “

          • I agree he would have had trouble. You probably know this but he went to a therapist and complained to him that Nirvana and other bands borrowed from him and made it huge….but he didn’t make it.

The doctor started to listen to other bands and he agreed…so yea I think he would have had a tough time…but he wanted it….yet the sabotage would come in play.

          • I’m surprised 14 Songs wasn’t bigger – it seems like the right record at the right time, and ‘World Class Fad’ was a great single.

          • I haven’t listened to that one enough. I know the song you are talking about…and it had the sound of the time.

  1. 24/24 with 3:10. Why does Thom Yorke always look like a serial killer? I assume Westerberg is in Minnesota. I actually don’t know much about the Replacements (even though I once saw them open for Elvis Costello).

    • I think Yorke and serial killers both don’t get enough sun? It’s cool you saw The Replacements – they were a famously erratic live band. There’s a story about them opening for Tom Petty and all wearing his wife’s clothing.

      • Heh. I’d heard of the Replacements but didn’t really know them. For us, they were just the opening act. We got there partway through their act and they definitely had some rabid fans. In retrospect I wish we had paid more attention. But that was a long time ago and so now I’ll just let it be.

    • Hole are pretty well-known – frontwoman Courtney Love was married to Kurt Cobain. She & Him is a side-project for actress Zooey Deschanel.

    • Thanks for playing- you were very fast! I’d barely heard of The Judds, but then they came up on a documentary I was watching last night.
