1. Nice job by Jim last week. Let’s see if he can top my score of 24/24 with 3:48 this week. Haha, I’m sure that time will be surpassed more than once. This was fun and really easy.

2. Man On The Run is a good Biography focusing on Paul’s 1970s era, solo and with Wings. It’s kind of gritty and honest, and the early part explaining the Beatles breakup is sad and almost depressing. He passed out at 1 point from smoking too many cigarettes’ in a row. If Linda hadn’t gotten him out of bed and helped him with his his depression, he might still be there. Wings did an early gig at a High School and they got paid literally in dollars and loose change and Paul divvied it all up to everyone after the show … like, “1 for you, and 1 for me,” lol. It’s a good read and I recommend it. The Biographer is Tom Doyle.

   • That does sound interesting – I’m always on the lookout for interesting music books at the op shop or library, but rarely find anything I want to read.

     • I think you would like it. It’s honest and doesn’t candy coat any of the stories and events. It’s just straight on and good.😃

3. 24/24 with 2:47 left. Yee ha! First time getting them all, I think.

   • I read “Man on the Run” too. Good read. McCartney was absolutely lost without his mates at first. I actually liked “Shout.” THE Beatle book to read is “Tune In” by Mark Lewisohn who knows more about the Beatles than the Beatles. The first volume is out and he’s still working on the second one.

     • Jim, what’s the background of Lewisohn, just curious.

       • He’s a biographer and seems to have become somewhat of an insider. You’ll see references in other media to his meticulous work on, for example, the Beatles recordings. When they say he’s a leading authority, he is. Here’s his website.

         • Those of us who have read ‘Tune In’ eagerly await the 2nd volume but he admits it’s been a daunting task and doesn’t yet know when the next volume will arrive.

         • You and me both. I have to hold myself back from reading them exclusively. In the past few months I’ve read Chrissie Hynde’s autobio (good, but ends with early days of Pretenders), Grace Slick, which I enjoyed, and an Audible of Chris Frantz’s autobio about life in and out of Talking Heads. And Lennon: The Man, The Myth, The Music by Tim Riley.

     • The other one I’ve really enjoyed is Revolution on the Head. It opened my eyes about how much Lennon contributed to some of the most distinctive instrumental parts.

       • Interesting. A friend loaned me a book called ‘Lennon’ which I was reading when the ‘Get Back’ documentary came out. Well written. I forget the author’s name now. All that said, I think I’m Beatled out for now.

       • Thanks, Jim. Those all sound good. I have time to read lots of music bios. I don’t ever watch TV, or Hollywood movies or watch sports. I have internet, of course, and I work on my writing and music. But I don’t read fiction, and outside of inspirational books, I mainly read music bios. I’ve found that cutting out the other entertainment stuff frees up a lot of time and I don’t miss any of it.

         I would love to read the Talking Heads bio especially. I think they’re a great band. They got it all wrong in their song about Heaven (They sang that it’s boring there and nothing ever happens – that’s not true, lol), but otherwise they’re an amazing band and have a long history worth reading and learning about. 😃

         • In the liner notes for the compilation Sand in the Vaseline, Chris Frantz explains that they were busy rock stars and found the idea of some peace and quiet very appealing.

4. Cool nab on the book but I wonder why Macca is dissing it? Real shite or faux? Maybe you can decide after you finish it.

   • I think he didn’t have access to The Beatles themselves so he had to rely on secondary sources.

5. What does op shop mean? Like a thrift store or something?

   • Yup, it’s what we call a thrift shop in NZ.

6. It takes me 3 refreshes of the Sporcle page now to get to the quiz itself. Are you finding surveys and ads getting in your way too?

   I got 24/24 with 3:38 left

   • I did it earlier in the week with no issues, but Sporcle can be pretty annoying sometimes with its ads and surveys. Fast time but still 10 seconds behind Rich Kamerman.

     • If it’s three tries every time I’ll likely stop, is all.

       • OK, let me know how it goes next time. It sounds like there are alternatives, but I’ve been doing Sporcle for ages and don’t want to take the switch too lightly.

7. 24/24 with 2:25 left. What slows me down is not recognition of their faces. It’s those stupid pop-up ads and then having to search for the face. Otherwise I pretty much recognize them all, even hairy Stipe. I get a kick out of the Archies. What’s the point?

   • I occasionally have a bad time with Sporcle, but it wasn’t too bad for me when I tried the quiz. The thing I find the worst is when I have to do surveys.

8. 24/24 with 3:57 left. I agree with Jim S about those stupid pop-up ads.

   • Ooh, that’s really fast.

9. 24 with 3:08 to go. I got down to the Archies and something else, and thought with the drawing of the character, is it too obvious? And probably spent about 20 seconds pondering!

   • I had to stop and think about that one too.

10. 24/24 with 3:10 remaining. I’m happy that I didn’t mess up but there are some pretty lightning fast scores this week.

    Shout was one I read back in the early 80s.

    • My Shout is updated from the early 21st century, so it covers Harrison’s death and McCartney’s marriage to Heather Mills.

    Incidentally, Jet Punk is a comparatively less ad-blighted alternative to Sporcle if you’re a quiz addict.

    • I hadn’t heard of Jet Punk but it looks good. Sporcle has looked the same for years and probably needs a refresh. I think I’ll finish the series we’re on, then maybe look into featuring some Jet Punk.

18. Late to this but perfect score with 2:46 left. Did on my phone so knew my time would be slower and also wanted to make sure I didn’t make a stupid mistake son w I got in a role. Have to say pretty easy this week
