Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!!
Topped the NZ chart: from 8 August 1999 for 1 week
Danski and Delmundo were Danish DJs in the early 1990s, and named their project The Vengaboys. In 1997 they used the name for a pop group, recruiting four vocalists.
I was largely oblivious to The Vengaboys during the height of their fame. They enjoyed three number one hits in New Zealand over 1999 and 2000.

Unfortunately for Vengaboys vocalist Robin Pors, I do not love their music.
If you’ve read this blog before, you’ll know I don’t hate pop music. But pop songs, due to their in-your-face nature, are polarising. I don’t need my pop music to be overly complex or intellectually stimulating. But I prefer that it doesn’t insult my intelligence.
There’s nothing interesting on ‘Boom Boom Boom Boom!!’. A mundane vocal hook. A nursery rhyme chorus. Facile rhymes, with boom/room and together/forever. It’s a bottom-of-the-barrel pop record.

Most songs are better than that Vengaboys tune – I’m just obliged to cover it because it went to number one in NZ.
I remember seeing their name but I never heard this. It’s like sub-functional dance pop or Eurodance. It’s just annoying. Once in a while there would be one of these that became like a freak hit and sometimes it would be irresistible but this isn’t one of them, I’ll tell you that.
I think I maybe just don’t like much Eurodance, but this one is particularly dire…
I was trying to think of New Zealand artists that I have and all I can think of is Split Enz and then two electronic artists. And I don’t think they’re very famous. Do you know who Andrew Thomas is? He’s an Ambient guy who I love and his album Fearsome Jewel is like one of my top 10 ambient albums of all time. All I know about him is that he’s the former New Zealand frisbee champion, which I think is pretty cool. I think Australian frisbee champion too. And the only other act I can think of is Concord Dawn, who were a big Drum n’ Bass act like in the 90s. They were pretty good too.
I don’t know Andrew Thomas at all . Concord Dawn were pretty well known here though.
Lorde is probably our best-known solo artist. Only US number one hit.
