Congratulations to occasional contestant Heavy Metal Overlord, who scored the fastest time in last week’s Find The Band Member quiz.
Due to poor advanced planning on my part, we’re now up to Find the Band Member VII. We started at VI, and worked backwards – now there are a couple at the end to finish up.

I think the earlier ones are generally easier – I scored 20/24 this time around. I was pleased to see Andy Partridge included though.
In other news, my wife and I have been watching the Netflix series This Is Pop (incidentally, named after a song by Andy Partridge). It’s been interesting as largely it’s about areas of music I don’t know much about – like the first episode was about BoyzIIMen. Here are some interesting things I learned over the first few episodes:
- producer and engineer Ken Scott, who started his career working with The Beatles, was interviewed about Auto-tune. One of the attractions of Auto-tune is that it saves a lot of time capturing the perfect vocal on recording sessions. Lennon and McCartney were both excellent singers who could usually get a good take quickly, but the best vocalist Scott worked with was David Bowie, who nailed 95% of his vocals in one take.
- Brandi Carlile’s first three concerts were all Tanya Tucker. Carlile is an articulate interview too.
- On the Sweden episode, about how Sweden became a stealth pop superpower, it was pointed out that Sweden was able to success because most people in Sweden are fluent in English.

23/24 for me this week. Although I know what all the guys in Kings Of Leon and Stone Temple Pilots look like, those photos didn’t look familiar at all. This Is Pop sounds like an interesting series. I’ll see if it’s available here in the US.
I think Netflix made This Is Pop so it’s probably on there.
It IS on Netflix here, and I’ve added it to my Watch Later list.
You know what? Stone Temple Pilots was one of the ones I got wrong too, I think. I absolutely know what they all look like but I just didn’t recognize that picture, even though I’ve seen him with that bleached blonde hair before
23/24 2:41 left.
Great work – you’re in the joint lead so far.
Wow! I stunk this one up. 15/24. I’ll use the excuse that I was playing on my cellphone rather than my usual tablet.
I think it was a bit harder than the other weeks.
It was. I didn’t really know what a lot of those people looked like but it was even harder on the smaller screen.
Dang this was hard! I got 11/24 with 1:59 left. I had no idea ‘The Brady Bunch’ had a band, though, wow! I had fun still. Thanks for the quiz!
I didn’t know The Brady Bunch band either.
Huh, glad I wasn’t the only one then. I’ve never even seen an episode of ‘The Brady Bunch’ actually. But I’ve heard of the show from other TV shows.
I saw the movie from the 1990s that was kind of an affectionate tribute.
21/24 with 3 minutes 25 left…
Great work – that’s a good score.
I only got 18. I didn’t know that they were called the Silver Platters on The Brady Bunch. I’ve seen it a million times but I didn’t know that’s what they were called. I remember the name of their big song though, It’s a Sunshine Day.
I just assumed it was talking about The Platters. I got a few wrong because of that assumption, I think.
Did you know that the Brady Bunch actually had a whole album, and they did a Carole King song on it? I never heard the album but the song they did is a great one called Sweet Sweetheart that’s on Carole King’s Writer album. She sings it with Merry Clayton. I’m not really anxious to hear The Brady Bunch version though. I’m sure it’s dreadful. Or maybe it’s fucking fantastic, who knows?, and I could have put it on that list of Best Carole King Cover Songs a couple weeks ago. LMAO!!!
I didn’t remember Sweet Sweetheart at all from listening through King’s stuff a while back – it’s pretty good.
Yeah it is. It’s a kind of old-fashioned song, But I think it’s cute and kind of fun.
21 out of 24 on this one. I actually got the Silver Platters
Good work! I don’t think I’ve ever seen an episode of The Brady Bunch.
20/24…this one was a lot harder.
Same score as me. We’ll see how VIII goes.
23/24 with 3:52 on the clock – this one was a lot tougher and a lot of fun
There have been a few 23s this week – it might end up a three or four way tie.
Well that’ll diminish the prize money
I’ve had trouble getting sponsorship lately.
Ah you gotta lean waaaay more to the right to get sponsors these days
Hero to zero this week. I was getting so many wrong I ended up rage quitting!
Sorry!
22/24 with 1:51 left
Ooh, that’s a good score this week.
I did terrible! 14/24 with 03:33. I mostly didn’t even know the bands for the ones I got wrong.
Thanks for playing anyway!
