The Sound Magics

Unfortunately, little has been uncovered about The Sound Magics, who were reportedly from Doesburgse or Arnhem. Released on Philips in 1966, the single’s picture sleeve shows the five young musicians with their amps and drums in the back garden of a thatched cottage. Four of them wear white roll-neck sweaters bearing the same “SM” logo as their bass drum; the fifth–presumably the singer–is dressed in black.

Don’t You Remember

‘Don’t You Remember’ hits a lovely midpoint between the mid-1960s work of The Beatles and The Zombies. It’s restrained, with a melancholy minor-key feel. The group’s singing is lovely, and the guitars glisten. They reportedly achieved their guitar sound by using Multitone amps.

It’s a shame that they only recorded a handful of songs before sinking into obscurity because this song is lovely.

The Aftermath

According to the group’s profile on RateYourMusic, fourteen different members played in The Sound Magics during their four years. Two of these members later played in Moan, alongside the “legendarily hedonistic” Herman Brood.

  1. “Don’t You Remember” sounds pretty sweet. I think your comparison to The Beatles and The Zombies is spot on. Just like The Sound Magics, I had never heard of Moan. “Flowers Everywhere” sounds pretty good as well!
