Tramar Lacel Dillard was born in Miami Gardens, Florida, and grew up with seven sisters. He joined the GroundHoggz, an amateur rap crew, and eventually became the hype man for Fresh Kid Ice.

Low

‘Low’ was Flo Rida’s debut single. It was immediately successful – it’s the most downloaded song of the 2000s, and it topped the Billboard singles chart for 10 weeks.

I love Wikipedia’s matter-of-fact description:

Lyrically, the song describes a sexually desirable girl dancing in a club, and the singer’s efforts to hook up with her, primarily by flaunting displays of cash.

My verdict

‘Low’ features a catchy chorus – it’s hard to deny that “low, low, low, low” hook. Guest star T-Pain deserves most of the credit – he wrote and sang the chorus, while Flo Rida’s rapped verses are forgettable.

The Aftermath

Flo Rida has enjoyed other hits, like ‘Right Round’ (with Kesha) and ‘Whistle’. He hasn’t released an album since 2012.

Conversely, it’s become popular to rework classic songs with the lyrics to ‘Low’. Here’s ‘In The Ghetto’, but with ‘Low’ lyrics:

  1. Every time I think of this song, I think of the movie ‘Zookeeper’ where Kevin James’ character is singing along to the song with his gorilla friend on their way to TGI Fridays.
