Wet Leg Album Reviews

Isle of Wight’s Wet Leg were breakout stars in 2021, when their innuendo-laden hit ‘Chaise Longue’ went viral. Their name comes from an Isle of Wight expression denoting visitors to the island, recognisable because they’d have wet legs from getting off the boat.

Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers met at Platform One College of Music on the Isle of Wight. They were in their late twenties when they released their breakthrough single ‘Chaise Longue’. Teasdale previously performed as a vocalist and pianist, and recorded singles as RHAIN.

Wet Leg

2022, 7.5/10
The innuendo-laden hit ‘Chaise Longue’ went viral in 2021. Wet Leg is the accompanying full-length record from Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers. It topped album charts in the UK and Australia.

I was initially prepared to write Wet Leg off as gimmicky, but later singles impressed me that there’s substance here. Their debut album mixes a few strands of music – the exuberance of Britpop, the slacker attitude of 1990s alt-rock, and the rawness of post-punk. ‘Chaise Longue’, with its string of endearing, silly double entendres, is far from the only humorously provocative song. There’s also ‘Wet Dream’, with its quirky promise “I’ve got Buffalo ’66 on DVD”. They’re most convincing on the full band songs like ‘Ur Mum’ and ‘Supermarket’.

Wet Leg’s debut is a ton of fun.

Moisturizer

2025, 8.5/10
On Wet Leg’s second album, they’re a full band rather than a duo. Their touring band are promoted to full membership. It’s justified, as Moisturizer is tough rather than twee. Teasdale leans into a rock star persona, brash but still quirky. The final effect is surprisingly close to the Pixies.

Lead single ‘Catch These Fists’ is immediately exciting and propulsive.

….dancing with your friends, being silly, and for that to be obnoxiously interrupted by some person trying to pick you up, it’s a very common occurrence, and very, very obnoxious. I think I’m conditioned to be so polite about things, but that particular night, I was not very polite.

Rhian Teasdale, Variety

‘Don’t Speak’ is a nice change of pace. Hester Chambers wrote the song for her partner, Wet Leg guitarist Josh Mobaraki, and her gentler voice is endearing. Teasdale and Mobaraki cowrote almost half of the songs on the record, including the pretty ‘Pokemon’, with Teasdale hitting lovely high notes. But more often, Teasdale hits a blend between sassy and lovestruck, like on ‘Mangetout’ and ‘Pillow Talk’.

Wet Leg are still a little gimmicky, but Moisturizer is substantial.
