My 8-year-old daughter decided that it was her turn to write this weekend, offering to prepare a post about Parry Gripp. Thankful for a weekend off, to celebrate my 15th wedding anniversary, I agreed. She’s even more succinct than I am.
Gripp’s known for his songs for children, which are often fixated on animals or food. Sometimes I’m convinced that he uses a random generator to make song names – ‘Chimpanzee Riding on a Segway’ is a typical title. Gripp started his career in the band Nerf Herder – Star Wars is another common theme. Much of Gripp’s work could be described as pop-punk, but he dips into pop.
Gripp has a lot of songs. My daughter didn’t include her gateway to Gripp, ‘There’s a Cat Flushing the Toilet’. Nor did she include Gripp’s most popular song, ‘It’s Raining Tacos’, described by TV host John Oliver as a banger.
10 Best Parry Gripp Songs

#10 Reggie the Christmas Hamster
2013
I like the loud guitars. I like how Reggie puts the toys in his cheeks.

#9 Baby Chicky Dance Party
2021
I like how it’s disco and that they make chicken noises.

#8 Tortoise Playing Minecraft
2018
I like Minecraft and I like how the song mentions so many llamas.

#7 Underwear Frog
2020
The frog’s underwear is tight and white – that’s the way he likes them!

#6 There’s a Rabbit on the Salad Bar
2021
It’s my dad’s favourite Parry Gripp song. I like the lyrics – “Giving the bean sprouts a quick once over/Hitting that kale like a lawn mower” and “that bunny is savage”. I like how it’s very funky.

#5 Walk Like an Ewok
2021
Ewoks are so cute, and I like how they make friends with Princess Leia and how they think C-3PO is a deity.

#4 Last Train to Awesometown
2013
Yeah! It reminds me of Alvin and the Chipmunks when Theodore gets hypnotised. It’s very danceable, and there are five different kinds of nachos.

#3 Kitty Got A Boom Boom Box
2021
Singing boom boom boom! “Litter box sounds messy, like garbage. But a boom boom box sounds cool, like an awesome club you can party at.”

#2 This Cat Video is Fire
2019
It’s very funky and danceable, and I like how they make cat videos.

#1 Gingerbread Snail
2021
This song is very disco and party. I like how the snail makes gingerbread for Santa.
Did my daughter miss your favourite Parry Gripp song?

I didn’t listen to any of this yet but I can’t wait cuz I’m a fan of good children’s albums and I’m always looking for good ones. And also she said that a lot of this is disco and I’m also a fan of disco. What are her favorite children’s albums? My favorite ones are Really Rosie by Carole King, The Point by Harry Nilsson and No by They Might Be Giants.
I’m not sure of you’ll enjoy it or not – I guess there’s only one way to find out. She likes the TMBG kids stuff but I doubt she’d dig Nilsson or King yet. She only likes music if it’s high energy.
That’s true, adults usually like Really Rosie and The Point more than kids do. Although my friend’s kids who I used to babysit for loved Really Rosie. Especially Chicken Soup With Rice cuz it had the months in it with all the holidays. And the alphabet and number songs they loved too. Cuz they were about the right age I guess.
My daughter is 23, but when she was your daughters age Perry Grip was constantly being played. I still love our introduction to him, Cat Flushing a Toilet ( complete with cat meows and toilet flushing sound).
Enjoy these times with her. They grow up really fast.
There’s a Cat Flushing the Toilet was actually the song that introduced her to Gripp – she played that and Hamster on a Piano so much that she doesn’t really care to hear them anymore.
Graham, that post brought a big smile on my face. First of all, congrats on your 15th wedding anniversary. Now to your 8-year-old daughter. Not only do I love the fact she’s into music, but her descriptions of these 10 songs are just adorable – and, yes, very succinct! Oftentimes, I have a tendency to be lengthy, so I can definitely learn from her!
I think there are much wafflier writers than you out there.
Parry Gripp actually wrote to her on Twitter after the article, thanking her for the list, which was cool of him.
Wow, that is amazing!
That really is cool that he replied to her. I never heard his name before but I do remember Nerf Herder from back in the days of the ’90s. They had some kind of hit but I can’t remember what it was. A few times I’ve had famous people reply to me, but it was always by accident. I wasn’t sending them a personal message on their website or anything, I just left a comment on one of their songs on YouTube or something and they just happened to be reading the comments at the same time and they replied to my comment like right away. And it shocked the s*** out of me. One time it was Lene Lovich the old New Wave star. And she ended up telling me all this stuff about her musical partner Les, and how they broke up and they weren’t lovers anymore but they’re still good friends and stuff. And she told me how she misses being famous and how Fame was so fleeting and how she loved being popular but she didn’t know it wouldn’t last forever. It was crazy. And another time it was the folk singer Danny O’Keefe, and he was telling me which of his albums I should listen to first. And another time it was David T Walker the guitar player, and I left a comment saying how much I liked his guitar playing on Carole King’s Fantasy album, and he started telling me how he went on tour with her for that album and how they played in Central Park and everything. It makes you wonder if they sit there and read all the comments on YouTube about them. Obviously they do sometimes.
I always try and write like the person I’m writing about might be reading – apart from Mike Love, who I don’t really mind about insulting. It’s cool you had all those interactions – I’ sure all those people appreciated being remembered.
It never ever crossed my mind when I leave a comment on YouTube that the person might actually read it. But evidently they do sometimes.
No love for Nom Nom Nom Nom Nom Nom Nom?
I’m not sure if she knows that one – Gripp has an intimidating amount of songs.
I checked with her and she was able to hum that one, so it was on her radar.
What a cute post. I’ve never heard of Parry Gripp, and he’s from Southern California! At least most of his songs are very short, much like the attention spans of his target audience.
He’s pretty big in guitar-based kids music. But I don’t know if I would have heard of him either if I didn’t have kids, apart from when John Oliver enthusiastically played ‘Raining Tacos’.
Great one. I blooming love Nerf Herder too.
I don’t know them at all, but you’re tge second person to endorse them.

I liked that, even if mixing Star Wars and Star Trek is a problematic position sometimes.
Ah, a puritan.
I played some more Nerf Herder last night and my 8-year-old figured out immediately that it was Parry Gripp.
I’m 63, I missed the PG boat because my kids are grown, then discovered on my YouTube feed Peanut Butter Cookie, very danceable, so I investigated further and found Car Flushing A Toilet in both animated and real world versions. My favorites are the insistent Yum Yum Breakfast Burrito, the delicious electronic Pancake Robot, and, #1, for me, Wienerina, that loveable vampire dog.
Thanks for writing in! I thought my daughter should have included Cat Flushing a Toilet, since it was her gateway in, but she seems a bit burnt out on it. Pancake Robot is a good one too. I don’t know if I’ve heard Wienerina.
