Music Quiz: Guess Em In Fewer Words

Congratulations to ‘Boom Boom’ Rich Kamermancini, who won for the second week running in last week’s 4×4 quiz. This week it was a lot closer, with a bunch of contestants very close behind his time.

This week you need to guess artists based on a few words from the song titles. The clues get shorter (but not necessarily more difficult) as the quiz goes on. There’s a skip button if you need to come back to any later.

I scored 40/40 with 5:03 remaining. Can you beat my time?

It sounds like the rock and roll hall of fame inductees for 2021 will be announced soon. While I find the process a little too nebulous and political, I’m still interested in the results. Who are your picks of the nominees this year?

  • Mary J. Blige
  • Kate Bush
  • Devo
  • Foo Fighters
  • The Go-Go’s
  • Iron Maiden
  • JAY-Z
  • Chaka Khan
  • Carole King
  • Fela Kuti
  • LL Cool J
  • New York Dolls
  • Rage Against the Machine
  • Todd Rundgren
  • Tina Turner
  • Dionne Warwick

They normally pick 6. If I was in charge I’d take:
– Kate Bush – creative giant who’s made classic singles (‘Wuthering Heights’) and classic albums (Hounds of Love, Aerial)
– Fela Kuti – Africa is way underrepresented, and Kuti had a great back-catalogue.
– Iron Maiden – metal is also underrepresented
– Todd Rundgren – string of great albums in the early 1970s, and a sizeable contribution as a producer too.
– Jay-Z
– The Go-Go’s – pioneering all-female rock band who managed to combine critical acclaim and sales (their debut Beauty and the Beat went to number one).

  1. Nice job interpolating my name into this post, Graham. I appreciate it. Got another perfect score this week, with 5:31 left on the clock. Although it’s a faster time than yours I’m quite certain it will be surpassed by others. I really enjoyed the format of this quiz. Hopefully there will be others like it.

Every year I care less & less about the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. There are too many deserving artists who have never even been nominated and too many undeserving artists who have been inducted.

      • And, like you I think, I am looking at this objectively as a voter, rather than as my favorites per se. King is long overdue as is Warwick.

        • King is in as a songwriter, just feels like her year – she got a bit of attention with Tapestry having its 50th anniversary this year.

I mostly chose my favourites, although my heart would take King over Jay-Z.

          • See, Jay-Z means nothing to me. But if I were a voter, at some point I would recognize his impact and vote for him. Instead of gnashing my teeth every year hoping that Jethro Tull gets in.

  2. 38 of 40. accidentally hit the b52s instead of the bangles on the one.
for R&R HOF, I’d go with
    Kate Bush
    Go Gos
    Foo Fighters
    Tina Turner
    Carol King
    LL Cool J

  3. 36/40 for me.

About the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, does it really matter? Because my picks would be really my favourites out of the nominees and everyone has different opinions so is it better to have a hall of fame of our own?

    Anyways, my picks would be:
    Kate Bush
    Fela Kuti
    Iron Maiden
    Dionne Warwick
    Todd Rundgren

  4. Forgot the HoF question: I think the HoF is a joke where the fix is always in, just like any other awards show. Still, if I had to care, I’d say they ought to go with long-time artists who’ve been overlooked forever and who ought to be there before others. So, from that list, Maiden, Devo, New York Dolls. I don’t know when they let rap//new r&b into the Rock And Roll HoF, so LL Cool J, Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige and Chaka Khan’s presence mystify me.

  5. 37/40 with 2:27 left.

As for Hall of Famers… I had a chuckle when I saw Foo Fighters. That whole Hall of Fame thing doesn’t matter at all.
