Music Quiz: Will, Won’t, Can, Can’t

Congratulations to Jim, Rich, Badfinger20, and Tony who all scored perfect marks in last week’s 1970s quiz.
This week’s challenge requires you to fill in will, won’t, can, or can’t into song titles. I like how they included both Joy Division’s song and the Captain and Tenille song that inspired it. I scored 38/40 – can you beat me?

I’m way slow on this, but does anyone else really enjoy Vampire Weekend’s first single from their recently released album Father of the Bride? The video has snakes, pancakes, and Danielle Haim apparently auditioning for a shampoo commercial.
34/40. A few I should have gotten but didn’t. The rest… ?? So this week I am not “A number one, top of the list
King of the hill, A number one.”

Is that what Sporcle told you this week? You must have scored in a high percentile.

Nope. I was randomly and for no good reason quoting “New York, New York,” I thought you’d pick up on that.

Nope, only know some of the words – I know the first lines. It would make for a good Sporcle response.

Got about 30 in a row with no problem and then hit a few snags, ending up with 36/40, so not quite as good as our host. I have no thoughts on Vampire Weekend. Too many other things on my to-be-played list so I’ll let others chime in.

36 puts you in first equal among the chasers.

33 – 20 were effortless and then I’ll take a 13/20 for attempting logical guesses!

Good score – good guessing hit rate.

Yes, quite like that track. Slick, interesting production as well. Cheers

Didn’t realise it was 5+ minutes long though…geez. Slice off two minutes? What do you think?

I think it would have justified having a separate single version. I think there’s enough happening for 5 minutes on the album version. Overall, the album has 18 tracks in 57 minutes, so generally pretty brief.

The production keeps the interest up for sure, but just because it can doesn’t mean it should. I listened to the band Haim for the first time earlier….quirky/cool production there too

I like Haim a lot – I don’t think they’ve made an album that’s great the whole way through, but they sing so nicely. My wife likes them because they remind her of Wilson Phillips from her youth.

That’s about right. Some good moments but they get a bit repetitive after a while.

Ariel Rechtshaid is really good – done a lot of good production jobs this decade. Looking good for my ten best producers list sometime.

Yes from a mixing/production point of view that track is top shelf. Never heard that name what else has he worked on?

I mainly know him from alt pop stuff like Haim and Sky Ferreira, but he’s done mainstream stuff like Madonna and Kylie Minogue too.

I got 31. I’ve never been much of a Vampire Weekend fan and the song doesn’t do much for me.

Looks like you’re in first equal at the moment – good job!

Not that great, but 33/40. Some easy ones and some pure guesses (mostly wrong guesses).

BTW, I know little to nothing about Vampire Weekend or Haim but that’s not a bad song. I like that guitar figure. Different. Not something I’d buy but not bad.

There’s quite a bit of Paul Simon (especially Graceland) in Vampire Weekend, Haim often resemble 1980s Fleetwood Mac, while the album I’m covering for New Music Review next week sounds like The Carpenters in places…..

An odd mix.

Stunk that one up a bit with a 37/40, I can’t get them all

37 is the best of the challenging scores, I think – I might actually win this week, doesn’t happen very often.

34-40 if I knew it I knew it right away – rest we’re lucky guesses

Will check out song later – on my phone before my sons basketball game. Really enjoyed Haim’s first album – they are fun in concert

I’ve never seen Haim – I think they played a festival here a few years back, would have been fun to go.

A good not great score of 30/40 for me
